Record 450,000 Visit Lucky Star Shrine on New Year's

Anime News!!! Infowashinomiya.thOver the first three days of the new year, a record 450,000 visitors came to the Washinomiya Shrine, the Tokyo area's oldest shrine and a real-life backdrop for the Lucky Star anime series. Otaku have been flocking to this shrine since the 2007 anime featured Kagami and Tsukasa Hiiragi — twin sister characters who supposedly work at the shrine as miko (shrine maidens).

This year's attendance is 150,000 higher than the attendance at 2008's festivities. Since the anime premiered, attendance during the New Year's holiday season has grown five times bigger — from 90,000 in 2007 and 300,000 in 2008 to 420,000 in 2009 and 450,000 this year.

Just east of Washinomiya on Sunday, 2,077 fans bought Satte City's official certificate of registration for the family of the Lucky Star character Konata Izumi. Lucky Star manga creator Kagami Yoshimizu — who came from Satte himself — drew the illustration on a special certificate of residency for the fictional family.

The registration ceremony took place on Sunday during the traditional New Year's holidays, and Yoshimizu himself appeared (with his mother) to accept the original certificate from Mayor Hideo Machida. Asahi Shimbun's My Town Saitama website posted images from the ceremony.

Anime News!!! Mainimg2.thThe first 643 fans, who waited in line since at least early morning, received numbered certificates. Yoshimizu signed the first 53 certificates. The certificates will continue to be sold at the city's department that promotes economic growth.

Yoshimizu lived in Satte until 2008, and the Satte City Chamber of Commerce and Industry renovated his former home after he moved out. The home has since reopened last March as the "birthplace" of Lucky Star. The "Kimagure Studio Yoshimizu Kagami Gallery Satte" ("Whimsical Studio Kagami Yoshimizu Gallery Satte") now features a recreation of the Izumi family's fictional home. Yoshimizu's former address — Satte City Kita 3-14-18 — is listed on the Izumi family's certificate of residence.

Katanagatari Production Materials Posted Before Debut

Production materials for the anime adaptation of NisiOisin's Katanagatari novel have been posted online — three weeks before the anime's January 25 television premiere. The posted materials include animation footage, two songs in various formats, scripts for 12 episodes, character designs, and storyboards. One site hosting a link to the materials alleges that they were leaked from the FTP (file transfer protocol) site of WHITE FOX, the studio producing the anime.

The anime is slated to air as 12 monthly one-hour specials — one for each novel volume. This anime will be the second one based on a NisiOisin work after Bakemonogatari.

The original 12-volume Katanagatari novel centers on Shichika Yasuri, the seventh generational head of the Kyotō-ryū school of martial arts in medieval Japan. He and his older sister Nanami live on an isolated island, until a military advisor named Togame tells him of the final 12 swords forged by a legendary swordsmith. At Togame's bidding, Shichika embarks on a journey to find all 12 of the swords.

The FTP site that is the alleged source of the documents is still active as of Tuesday with the working login name "koresawa." The leaked documents include the final script drafts of the first 10 episodes, the working script drafts of the last two episodes, the storyboards for several versions of the opening animation and the first eight episodes, several versions of Minami Kuribayashi's opening theme song "Meiya Kadenrō," Yousei Teikoku's ending theme song "Kariuta," and the full opening animation footage.

The Yui Horie Clips 2 video collection debuted at #2 on SoundScan Japan's chart for all Blu-ray Discs. The Nana Mizuki Live Diamond x Fever concert video dropped to #4; it had actually debuted at #1 the week earlier, but SoundScan Japan's chart was not published that week due to the year-end holidays.

The Hetalia – Axis Powers Movie!!

Well, how many of you have heard of Hetalia – Axis Powers? It’s a series of short anime episodes screened on the web, that re-imagines World War I and II. The show’s characters consists of different characters, each portraying a different country. e.g. Italia(Italy), Doiitsu(Germany) and Nihon (Japan).

The show’s first season had 26 episodes, and with the announcement of a second season, made earlier in April this year, it’ll bring the show’s episode count to 52. But if 52 episodes of Hetalia isn’t enough for you, fret not, cause there’s a Hetalia movie coming soon.

Gentosha Comics has announced on its website that a theatrical anime film adaptation of Hidekaz Himaruya's Hetalia - Axis Powers manga has been green-lit for 2010. More details will be provided in the November issue of Monthly Comic Birz magazine on September 30 and on the anime's official website, Hetalia.com. The November issue will also have a special feature to mark the green-lighting of the film.

The "cynical gag" manga and anime take the archetypal characteristics of about 20 countries and regions, and anthropomorphize them as (mostly) bishōnen characters. The story re-imagines various historical eras including World War I and II. More than 700,000 copies have been sold of the first two published manga volumes since 2008.

According to the updated website, the third volume of the manga will ship this spring. The first two volumes have sold over 900,000 copies so far. Himaruya's other manga, Chibi-san Date, will ship its first compiled book volume on November 24.

Hetalia fans rejoice!
